  • 17 Nov, 2011

The Second SANEI Conference was hosted by the Institute for Integrated Development Studies (IIDS), Kathmandu, Nepal on 28-29 August 2000.

Of the 40 SANEI member institutes, 16 participated in this conference. In addition, 7 non-member institutes were also represented. A total number of 31 participants from member and non-member institutes participated in the conference.

The main agenda of the conference was to present and discuss the findings of the completed research projects funded in the previous year. Nine of the ten studies sponsored were presented and discussed. The study on Health Insurance Reform in India by Ajay Mahal could not be presented as he was unable to participate in the conference.

The presentation of each study was followed by the principal discussant's comments and a general discussion. Prof. T N Srinivasan's (Member, RAP) comments added further quality to the discussion. Feedback provided at the conference will be used in improving the studies. The volume containing these studies is expected to be published in 2001.

The Kathmandu conference was also used to present and discuss four studies under the Global Research Project (GRP) from the region.

The Conference also formally launched the second phase of collaborative research projects under SANEI. The seven proposals selected for funding under this initiative. These are being carried out by 16 institutions in the region. Six research proposals were presented by the respective researchers at the conference.

In addition, the conference discussed the modalities of capacity building in the region. Most participants favoured the idea of a summer school and training workshop with resource persons from the best Universities and policy-making bodies.

There was also strong enthusiasm for developing a SANEI website. It was felt that the website could serve as an important means to disseminate information to wider audiences.

The second meeting of the Steering Committee also met at Kathmandu. One of the important issues discussed at this meeting was the draft constitution of the SANEI. The committee hopes to adopt a constitution before the next conference.
